Piazza Capranica, is located in the Rione Colonna, a few steps from the Pantheon; it is a building of the eleventh century and is one of the few surviving specimens of the time belonging to the pre-Renaissance era. Its name derives from the building built in 1451 by Cardinal Domenico Capranica to house the College for the education of ecclesiastics. After his death, his brother Cardinal Angelo wanted to create here the family residence and so he built the building with the tower at the corner of the current Via del Collegio Capranica, to which he destined the college (inaugurated in 1478), reserving the oldest part to the family. Thus there were the two marble portals with architrave: the one under the tower has the inscription “COLLEGIUM CAPRANICENSE” and five coats of arms abraded, while the other, the one on the right and entrance of the original palace, has notched coats of arms: in the center that of Pope Nicholas V, the other of the Roman People and it reads the date 1451. The portal also has the inscription “TEATRO CAPRANICA”, since once it was also the entrance to the ancient theater opened in 1679, and later transformed, in 2005, into a congress center where it also hosts operas and concerts.
