Rione Celio is the nineteenth district of Rome, takes its name from the Caelian Hill on which it extends, and is one of the Seven Hills of ancient Rome. During the period of Ancient Rome, many buildings arose in this area, such as the Nymphaeum of Nero, the Claudian aqueduct and the Colosseum, the largest and most famous amphitheatre, symbol of Rome, which attracts large crowds from all over the world. The streets in the south-east of the neighborhood are mainly touristy and include Via di S. John Lateran, renowned for its shops and numerous bars. The green areas of the area are: Parco del Celio and Villa Celimontana. The neighborhood can be defined as exclusively residential starting from the late Republican age, when some particularly luxurious houses were built there, such as that of Mamurra, the “praefectus fabrum” of Julius Caesar. We remember the villa of Domitia Lucilla Minor, where Marcus Aurelius was born. Numerous churches and monasteries arose around this hill, such as the Basilica of San Clemente in Rome, Santo Stefano Rotondo, Santi Giovanni e Paolo, and that of the Four Crowned Saints. To the south of the Caelian were built the largest imperial baths the Baths of Caracalla. A great ancient road, it ran along its entire ridge: it is the “Via Caelimontana”, which exited from the Porta Caelimontana of the same name and extended up to Porta Maggiore with a route that corresponds to that of the current Via di S. Stefano Rotondo, Piazza S. Giovanni in Laterano, Via Domenico Fontana and Via Statilia.
