Vicolo della Moretta is located close to Via Giulia, Via Monserrato, Via del Pellegrino and Via dei Banchi Vecchi. The area was completely demolished in the 1930s, with the exception of the church of the Holy Spirit of the Neapolitans, the church of S. Filippo Neri and for the façade of the Ghisleri College (now the Virgilio High School); in fact, during this’ era, many ideas and proposals circulated on how to modify and improve the Baroque city, the one that had grown enormously in the Campo Marzio area. In 1931, the new Master Plan of Rome was approved, inspired above all by the architect Marcello Piacentini. Between 1936 and 1939, some buildings located halfway along Via Giulia were demolished, replaced by a large school complex, the Middle School and the Virgilio High School. In those years, other buildings were demolished in the same area (between Vicolo della Moretta and Vicolo del Malpasso), in accordance with the crazy idea of creating a large road connecting Piazza della Chiesa Nuova and the slopes of the Janiculum, where the “move” of the sixteenth-century Mostra dell’Acqua Felice (currently in Largo di S. Susanna). To carry out this project, the architect Piacentini proposed demolishing the Regina Coeli prison and moving it to Rebibbia prison. In 1941, the evolving war halted all initiatives. Piacentini’s project was not completed, however, the demolitions carried out between the Chiesa Nuova and the Lungotevere were never compensated, leaving an incredible urban void. Where the buildings bordering Vicolo della Moretta once existed, today there is a gigantic area where at the beginning of the 2000s, during excavations for the construction of a PIP (2009-2011), a complex of buildings constructed at the end of the 1st century BC, in the midst of the Augustan age, came to light. In some rooms of the complex were located the stables of the four teams of charioteers who competed in the Mass Circus
