Rione Ponte is the fifth district of Rome, located on a bend of the Tiber. The Rione Ponte takes its name from the pedestrian Ponte Sant’Angelo, flanked by statues and built by Hadrian in 134 A.D. to allow access to his own monumental tomb, which was under construction at the time. Over the centuries the mausoleum became Castel Sant’Angelo, which today rises just beyond the border rionale. The Rione Ponte is crossed by two Renaissance roads: Via Giulia and Via dei Coronari, thanks to which pilgrims could reach San Pietro. Over time it took its current name from the sellers of crowns (that is, rosaries) that were numerous along this road, which is now renowned for its exclusive antique dealers. The Rione was inhabited over the centuries by famous people such as Michelangelo, Raphael and many others; also its narrow streets with characteristic buildings, medieval arches, The winding passages bear witness to an era that no longer exists and constitute a memory not only architectural but above all historical, that history made of everyday life, tradition and folklore.
