Aurelio is the XIII district of Rome, located in the western area of the city, close to the Leonine Walls and the Aurelian Walls, established in 1921, it takes its name from the Via Aurelia. The ancient consular road was opened in 241 BC, probably by the censor Gaius Aurelius Cotta, as a penetration route towards southern Etruria then partly under Roman control, the road, which followed an older route, started from the “pons Aemilius” (later Ponte Rotto) and, having climbed the Janiculum, exited from the Aurelian Walls at the Porta Aurelia (the modern Porta San Pancrazio); the first section (273 BC), which ended at the colony of “Cosa” (modern Ansedonia), was redone by the consul Lucius Aurelius Cotta in 119 BC and extended by the censor Marcus Aemilius Scaurus up to Luni (107 BC), while only in the imperial age (“Itinerarium Antonini”) did the term Aurelia indicate the entire route from Rome to Gallia Narbonensis and the city of “Arelate” (today’s Arles). To the north of the neighborhood is the “Pineto Regional Urban Park”, a protected natural area and the second largest park in the capital after the Appian Way. Not far from the Vatican and adjacent to Via Baldo degli Ubaldi, Valle Aurelia, also called “Valley of Hell”, is a name attributed to the fury of the Landsknechts who massacred papal troops here in 1527. Today, the area has been transformed into a shopping center near the remains of the Veschi Furnace. Adjacent to the Vatican City, the “Porta Cavalleggeri”, one of the gates that opened into the Leonine Walls, the remains of which, walled up, are visible in the stretch of walls on the square that took its name.
