The Balduina district is part of the XIV Municipality and is located on the southern side of Monte Mario; it boasts 139 meters of height and this makes it the highest point in the city. Very often the area has been the backdrop for cinematographic and literary works. The name of the area has its origins in the name of the brother of Pope Julius III del Monte, Baldovino, owner of many lands located on the slopes of Monte Mario. The oldest street is Via San Tommaso d’Aquino which connects with the most important street in the “Via Trionfale” district which led pilgrims to St. Peter’s Basilica. In the 1950s, buildings began to be built, intended and desired by the professional cooperatives of journalists, magistrates, officers and ministerial officials. In the ‘60s the area reached its maximum building development: the buildings expanded along the entire slope of the hill, settling on one side along the Rome-Viterbo railway and on the other on the ridge marked by the Via Trionfale. The neighborhood retains traces of the ancient past and is characterized by numerous shops capable of satisfying the needs of the population; many of the shops are family-run and there are numerous markets. There are spacious green areas such as the Monte Mario nature reserve, the famous “Zodiac”, where you can admire a suggestive panorama of the city and the astronomical observatory with the Copernican Museum attached. The central streets and Capitoline attractions can be reached easily and in a very short time thanks to the good transport network.
