The name of the square was assigned by the City Council of Rome in 1885 as part of the name of the streets in the building district Prati di Castello, being located at the mouth of Via Cola di Rienzo on the building bridge to the People (then renamed Ponte Umberto I and finally Ponte Regina Margherita). In 1906 the square became the first terminus of the tramway Rome-Civita Castellana, designed by Ettore Angelelli; this terminus will be moved only in 1932 with the transformation of the tramway in the railway Rome-Civita Castellana-Viterbo, extended to a design by Ernesto Besenzanica in Piazzale Flaminio. The square has a rectangular shape and is between the trident composed of Via Cola di Rienzo, Via dei Gracchi and Via Valadier, to which are added Via Virginio Orsini and Via Federico Cesi, and the bridge Regina Margherita, coming connected through two ramps to the underlying lungotevere (lungotevere Michelangelo and lungotevere dei Mellini). At the center of the square, which is partly drivable, there are two green areas dedicated respectively to Ettore Troilo (to which was named in 2015 the portion between Via Cola di Rienzo and Via dei Gracchi) and Luigi Bigiarelli (to which was dedicated in 2022 the portion between Via Cola di Rienzo and Via Federico Cesi). The square is surrounded by buildings in eclectic style including the Casa de’ Salvi, designed by architect Pietro Aschieri.
