Rione Celio is the nineteenth district of Rome, takes its name from the Celio hill on which it extends, and is one of the Seven Hills of ancient Rome. In the period of Ancient Rome many buildings arose in this area, such as the Nymphaeum of Nero, the Claudian aqueduct and the Colosseum, the largest and most famous amphitheater symbol of Rome which attracts large crowds from all over the world. The streets in the south-east of the district are purely touristy and include Via di S. Giovanni in Laterano, renowned for its shops and numerous bars. The green areas of the area are: Parco del Celio and Villa Celimontana. The district can be defined exclusively residential starting from the late Republican age, when some particularly luxurious houses were built there, such as that of Mamurra, the “praefectus fabrum” of Julius Caesar. We remember the villa of Domizia Lucilla Minore, where Marcus Aurelius was born. Around this hill there were numerous churches and monasteries such as the basilica of San Clemente in Rome, Santo Stefano Rotondo, Santi Giovanni e Paolo and that of the Quattro Santi Coronati. South of the Celio, the largest imperial baths were built, the Baths of Caracalla. A great ancient street, ran along its entire ridge: it is the “Via Caelimontana”, which came out of the homonymous Porta Caelimontana and went as far as Porta Maggiore with a path that corresponds to that of the current Via di S. Stefano Rotondo, Piazza S. Giovanni in Laterano, Via Domenico Fontana and Via Statilia.
